All of these tracks were recorded professionally in my home studio using top of the line gear.   I am using Logic Pro on a super fast iMac with Waves plug-ins and NI sample instruments.  At the heart of my rig, is a vintage API 312 card in a 500 series rack.  This pre allows me to capture the nuances of my acoustic instruments and percussion as well as allow tracks to mix together in a clean and concise manner.  I am loving this unit, and I can’t wait to add more pre’s to the collection!  As always, if you need any additional edits or custom music work, please don’t hesitate to contact me!

The secret to recording a nice acoustic guitar track is to make sure your instrument plays in tune and has new strings!  Vary the distance from the guitar to get more or less room sound and to increase or decrease its presence in a mix.  For example:  if I am recording an acoustic guitar track within the context of a full band including electric guitars and pianos and vocals, I will set the lo cut filter on my small diaphragm condenser to cut below 150Hz.  This way, it is easier to place the track in mixdown.  If the acoustic guitar is only a supporting instrument, I will record it from a distance of 8-12″ to give it a little more “room” sound.  If it is meant to be featured, then I record closer to the instrument, pointed back a bit towards the soundhole around the 12-15th fret…  Happy tracking!

I wrote this song after a tough night of insomnia for my wife and I.  Sometimes life things can cause you not to sleep.  This track was written for her.  My sweet wife who deserves and needs a restful nights sleep.  Occasionally, on a more inspired piece of music, I will write a melody based on lyrical phrasing and not on licks.  This is one of those tracks.  “Sleep tight ba-by, sleep tight dear, sleep tight dar-ling, erase your fear”  were the lyrics in my head while I composed this melody.  Written simply on an acoustic guitar, with the idea of a peaceful, hopeful, background music piece to help with rest.

I can picture this track in a car commercial featuring the latest convertible or in a situation with a young clothing company.  This track just feels like summer time fun and would encourage dancing.  I can’t wait to get back to the beach this year.  Maybe this track can propel me there.  The idea of warm sand, the ocean waves, and a cold beer with nothing to do but sit sounds like a perfect couple of days to me.  After that though, I would have to get back to making music! I can’t stay away too long!
